Assignment 3: Transform Coding
Due Date: October 10, 2026
Implement the following parts of the transform coding/decoding.
- Take your ID photo i.e., passport size picture which is used in your ID.
- Convert the picture to gray scale (monochromatic) image using an in-built function
- Division of image to blocks (sub images of size 8x8). Use appropriate padding if required.
- Transform of 8x8 blocks: apply Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
- Quantization (using 50% and 25% of coefficients).
- Inverse transform and reconstruction of image from the retained coefficents.
- Compare and show the error after reconstruction for the same number of coefficients retained for DFT and DCT.
The error can be displayed as the difference image of the original image and reconstructed image. The Mean Square Error (MSE) can also be computed between the original image and reconstructed image.
Note:
1. This assignment is meant for implementation of material related to what has been covered in
the class and apply to some of the problems as above.
2. For the answers for the above problems if there is any sharing of information from
your friend/internet/other reference material, it is desired that you please
include/acknowledge the name of that reference.
3. You may submit the report of your assignment as a word or pdf
document.
You may do the implementation in any programming environment such as Python/MATLAB/C/C++/Java
