Dear Students, We are writing to you to make an earnest appeal against ragging. This social malaise has persisted in IITD for too long now in some form or the other (``interaction'' being a popular euphemism) and time has come to put a stop to it. Ragging has no place in a civilized society. In fact, the Supreme Court of India in a recent order has made it mandatory for all educational institutions to report ragging incidents to the local Police and has stipulated that exemplary punishments be given out to perpetrators of ragging. We believe that if ragging has to stop in IITD it is perhaps best that it happens through discussions and understanding and not through policing and high-handed punishments. This year the faculty proctorial team will act more to counsel and sensitize and less to police and discipline. We would like to treat the 2nd and 3rd year students as responsible adults and we do believe that the primarily responsibility for putting an effective stop to ragging lies with them and not with the faculty. It is not sufficient not to rag yourself, but as a responsible student it is also your duty to prevent ragging from happening. Please understand that as adult citizens of your country you are responsible and accountable for your actions. Please stand up and be counted. We have prepared a (anti) ragging web-page at http://www.iitd.ac.in/antiragging where we have put up some campaign material against ragging. Please use these (or anything else that you find fit) to convince your friends at IITD about the ills of ragging. Please feel free to get in touch with us if you wish to discuss something or bring something to our notice. best, Anurag Sharma Dean of Students Shashi Mathur Associate Dean of Students Subhashis Banerjee Head, Proctorial Committee
