• GCC     The C compiler we'll be using, gcc is part of this project. For c++ we'll be using g++. For a basic overview of what happens when you use compilers etc. see avinash's page.
• GDB     The debugger we'll be using. See here for a quickref sheet containing all the gdb commands you'll need. Note: You must add the option '-g' while compiling to use this properly.
• Make     Automation tool for code compilation. See here for a tutorial. Comes bundled with all linux distribs.
• RPM     Package Manager. Very frustrating way of installing something, though less frustrating than compiling from source. See 'man rpm' for all the options you'll ever need in your life. See YUM(For Fedora and most other linuxes) or Apt(For Debian based systems like Ubuntu) for better ways.
  For using any terminal based internet application(YUM, Apt atc.) through a proxy, do the following:
  • Type 'export http_proxy=http://username:password@proxy IP:port' , then 'export ftp_proxy=$http_proxy' and 'export https_proxy=$http_proxy'
  The downside is that your password is visible in plaintext. Search google for good repositories, notably the distribution site, and for Fedora, also see livna and freshrpms(google them. the first link is the one)

• FLTK     Fast Light Toolkit (For making GUI based appailcations) - Will come pre-installed with your linux distribution, if not get the stable 1.1.7 version here. An rpm will be put soon. For help, the manual is more than sufficient to get you started. A sample application is here to guide you. This is a game as part of my CSP301, but has slighlty buggy network programming :).
• Doxygen     Code documentation tool : WILL come with your linux distribution. See the manual here for basic steps required. It should be more than sufficient. For quickstart tutorial, see avinash's page
• Latex     Documentation tool : Again, comes with your linux distribution. This page. contains some guides for writing a latex document. The The (Not So) Short Introduction to LaTeX2e, is recommended. Compiling can be done with pdflatex. Some samples.
• CVS     Content Versioning System : For maintaining your source code content. See avinash's tutorial for basics.
• VI/VIM     A useful and powerful editor. The site has versions for all OS's . For a tutorial type 'vimtutor' after installation. Comes bundled with almost ALL linux distributions.
